Brazil parties may convene and unveil candidates as of today

Brazilian political parties may hold conventions to select and announce their candidates as of today. The events mark the beginning of electoral campaigns in the country and must take place by August 5.

Under Brazilian law, hopefuls must be affiliated to a political party. However, given the number of members intending to run for office, parties have to hold internal votes to decide who may join the race. Candidacies must be submitted to the electoral authorities by August 15.

On August 16, candidates may start campaigning both online and on the streets. Rallies, car convoys, the distribution of campaigning material, and paid propaganda in the media are allowed to take place until October 1—one day before the first round of elections.

The second round of the elections in Brazil is slated to take place on October 30.
