São Paulo’s Hospital Israelita Albert Einstein reported that Edson Arantes do Nascimento, known as Pelé, was discharged on Thursday morning (Sep. 30) one month after his admission.

According to a statement released by the hospital, Brazil’s king of football “shows a steady state and will continue chemotherapy, after the surgery for the removal of a tumor in the intestines.” The colon procedure was carried out on September 4.

Pelé was admitted on August 31 and underwent an operation four days later. The former soccer star, who is turning 81 years old on October 23, spent 15 days at an intensive care unit before being transferred to a room. On September 17, he went to the intensive care unit again after showing “a brief respiratory instability,” as per the medical report released back then, and was sent for semi-intensive care the next day.

On September 18, Pelé returned to his room, where he stayed until Thursday morning. He and Kely Nascimento, his daughter, released on social media videos of the previous days showing the former athlete’s recovery, with his physical therapy routine and playful moments, like when he is seen singing Leão do Mar, one of the anthems of Santos, the football club where he we rose to stardom.
