President Jair Bolsonaro said the country must be informed of “what really happens” with no panic. Without directly mentioning the social lockdown implemented in several Brazilian states and around the world as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, Bolsonaro reiterated that people need freedom.

“We need more and more freedom. The country needs to be informed of what really happens—not through panic, but through messages of peace, comfort, so everyone can be prepared for reality.” His address was delivered at the opening of video conference with Catholic and evangelical representatives aimed at celebrating Easter. The celebration was broadcast live on the president’s social networking pages on Sunday (12).

The president advocates the end of the isolation imposed to prevent the highly infectious COVID-19 from further spreading in the country. The virus has killed more than 1,223 in the country, and the infected add up to over 22 thousand, as per official figures.

Bolsonaro has expressed concern over economic losses stemming from social distancing measures, as most businesses have their doors closed. Tourism and restaurants, among other sectors, have already reported major losses. To fight recession, the president advocates the so-called “vertical isolation,” where only people in the risk group should remain isolated at home. In other words, the elderly and those with chronic diseases should stay at home, whereas young people and adults are allowed to work regularly.

Bolsonaro started his address saying that Brazil is “the world’s most Christian country,” adding that we are facing a difficult moment, without directly mentioning the new coronavirus. Next, he said that only God has a cure. “We’re living a difficult moment. We know who can cure us [points upwards]. God above everything. And here on Earth we have to do our part.”
