COVID-19: Deaths surpass 217 thousand, cases reach 8.8 mi in Brazil

The total number of people who died from COVID-19 since the beginning of the pandemic in Brazil has reached 217,037, as per the report published Sunday (Jan. 24) by the Ministry of Health. In 24 hours, 592 deaths and 28,323 cases were confirmed by health care teams. The number of people infected in the country went up to 8,884,577.

According to the ministry, 973,770 active cases are being monitored by health agents—up 11 percent from the previous update. The document also indicates that recovered patients in the country add up to 7,653,770.

States

The list of Brazilian states with the highest COVID-19 death toll is led by São Paulo (51,502), followed by Rio de Janeiro (28,833), Minas Gerais (14,279), Ceará (10,331), and Rio Grande do Sul (10,311). The ones with the lowest death counts are Roraima, Acre, Amapá, Tocantins, and Rondônia.

As for the case tally, São Paulo also ranks first (1.69 million), followed by Minas Gerais (690,853), Bahia (565,320), Santa Catarina (558,975), and Rio Grande do Sul (528,045).
