COVID-19: Deaths reach 214.1 thousand, cases 9.69 mi

The total number of people who died from COVID-19 since the beginning of the pandemic reached 214,147 in the report published by Brazil’s Ministry of Health on Thursday (Jan. 21). In 24 hours, health teams confirmed 1,316 new deaths. There are 2,835 deaths under investigation by health agents.

The amount of people infected since the beginning of the pandemic went up to 8,697,368. From Wednesday to Thursday, health authorities reported 59,119 new positive diagnoses for COVID-19. Recovered patients now add up to 7,580,741. There are also 902,480 people with active cases being monitored by health professionals.

States

On the list of Brazilian states with the highest death tolls, São Paulo ranks first (50,938), followed by Rio de Janeiro (28,440), Minas Gerais (13,891), Ceará (10,261), and Pernambuco (10,133). Those with the lowest amount of fatalities are Roraima (819), Acre (844), Amapá (1,019), Tocantins (1,334), and Rondônia (2,070).

In number of cases, São Paulo also stands atop the ranking (1.67 million), followed by Minas Gerais (668.2 thousand), Bahia (553.7 thousand), Santa Catarina (552.3 thousand), and Rio Grande do Sul (520.3 thousand).
