COVID-19: Brazil reports 24,858 cases, 497 deaths in 24h

Brazilian health authorities reported 24,858 new cases and another 497 deaths from COVID-19 in 24 hours. The figures were collected by health state secretariats and listed on the daily report released Thursday (Oct. 22) by the Health Ministry.

The increase bring the country to 155,900 deaths caused by the novel coronavirus. There are also 2,408 fatal cases under investigation. The total case tally since the beginning of the pandemic stands at 5,323,630.

As it stands today, 388,435 patients are being monitored, and 4,779,296 are reported to have recovered from the disease. This accounts for 89.8 percent of all Brazilian infected.

COVID-19 across the states

São Paulo state has had 1,076,939 confirmed cases of the new coronavirus, with 38,482 deaths. Of the total of cases diagnosed, 965,420 people have recovered.

The amount of people hospitalized in the state with a confirmed or suspected case of COVID-19 is 7,185—3,165 of whom in a serious state. The bed occupancy rate in intensive care units is reported at 40.1 percent in the state and 40.2 percent in the Great São Paulo area.

After São Paulo, the states with the highest COVID-19 death tolls are Rio de Janeiro (20,021), Ceará (9,243), Minas Gerais (8,621), and Pernambuco (8,527). The states with the least cases are Acre (685), Roraima (690), Amapá (738), Tocantins (1,072), and Mato Grosso do Sul (1,524).
