Mask use no longer required in Brazil airports, planes

After more than two years, wearing a mask will no longer be required on planes and at airports. The board of directors of Brazil’s sanitary authority ANVISA on Wednesday (Aug 17) unanimously decided to end the requirement for this form of protection on flights in the country.

Despite the move, face masks and social distancing will continue to be recommended as measures to reduce the risk of COVID-19 transmission. Some protocols from the beginning of the pandemic will also be maintained. For instance, airports and airlines will still be required to make hand sanitizer available, maintain continuous cleaning and disinfection procedures, and deplane passengers in rows.

Anvisa reported that the current epidemiological landscape has made it possible for more sanitary measures taken in 2020 to be updated. In May, the authority had allowed in-flight service as well as the maximum passenger capacity on airplanes, but maintained the make use in aircraft and restricted airport areas, now authorized.
