The Brazilian government is set to start the implementation of a nationwide initiative to help the country adapt to climate change and reduce carbon emissions in agriculture and ranching for the period of 2020 to 2030. Dubbed Plano ABC+, the scheme is set to kick off on September 1.

Based on incentives and the promotion of environmental technology, the policy is described in a document made public Thursday (Aug 11) by the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, and Supply. An English version of the text can be found here.

The Plano ABC+ is aimed at “adaptation to climate change and the control of greenhouse gas emissions in Brazilian agriculture and cattle-raising, with the increased efficiency and resilience of production systems, considering an integrated management of the rural landscape.”

Goals

Among the goals to be achieved by 2030 is the expansion of areas designated for degraded pastureland recovery (by 30 million hectares), no-till farming systems, integration systems, and planted forests.

By “encouraging the adoption of sustainable systems, practices, and products,” the Plano ABC+ aims to minimize vulnerabilities and make farming systems more resilient, preserving natural resources as well as improving biodiversity and the climatic stability, the text reads.
