The Brazilian women’s team thrashed Colombia 1-0 and won the Copa America. During the championship, the team had 6 victories, with 20 goals scored and none conceded.

This was Brazil´s eighth title in nine editions of the tournament. The final game was played at the Alfonso López Stadium in Bucaramanga, Colombia.

The goal in the final game on Saturday (Jul. 30) was scored in a penalty shootout by 30-year-old attacking midfielder Debinha, in the 38th minute of the first half. She is the top scorer of the Pia Sundhage era – the Swedish coach who took over the Brazilian women’s team in 2019 – and surpassed the 50-goal mark wearing the green and yellow jersey.

In addition to conquering the spots for the 2023 World Cup and the 2024 Olympics, the victory marked the success of a new generation of women’s football. For the first time in an international competition since 1995, Brazil did not count on at least one of the stars of the trio Cristiane, Formiga, and Marta. The first two have retired and jersey number 10 is recovering from knee surgery.

“The final game was not so beautiful. We were efficient to maintain the competitive advantage when Colombia was creating chances. It was important not to concede goals during the tournament. But speaking from the tactical point of view, we know we have to improve ourselves. Sometimes players who are on the bench start playing and change the game. But at other times, that doesn´t happen. We will work to improve ourselves,” the coach said at a press conference.
