Brazil’s COVID-19 case tally surpasses 9 million

Brazil has reached the mark of 9 million cases of COVID-19. In 24 hours, health authorities confirmed 61,811 new positive diagnoses, adding up to 9,058,687 people infected since the beginning of the pandemic of the novel coronavirus.

The data can be found in the daily update by the Health Ministry, released Thursday evening (Jan. 28). The document combines figures on deaths and cases from state health secretariats all over the country.

The total number of people who lost their lives to the pandemic has reached 221,547. From Wednesday to Thursday, another 1,386 deaths were confirmed. It was the year’s second highest daily count, preceded by January 7’s 1,524 fatalities. There are also 2,878 deaths being investigated by health care teams.

According to the ministry’s report, 913,346 people are still with active cases and are being monitored by health workers. Another 7,923,794 have recovered from the disease.

States

Atop the list of Brazilian states with the highest death tolls is São Paulo (52,481), followed by Rio de Janeiro (29,417), Minas Gerais (14,699), Rio Grande do Sul (10,567), and Ceará (10,432).

Those with the lowest amount of fatalities are Roraima (843), Acre (860), Amapá (1,048), Tocantins (1,366), and Rondônia (2,192).
