In 24 hours, Brazil’s health authorities reported 452 deaths from COVID-19. The update brings the country’s total death toll to 210,299. There are 2,766 deaths under investigation by health care teams.

The report on cases and deaths linked to the pandemic was published by the country’s Ministry of Health on Monday evening (Jan. 18).

The number of people infected since the beginning of the pandemic now stands at 8,511,770. From Sunday to Monday, 23,617 new positive diagnoses were added to the statistics.

There are also 849,424 people with active cases being monitored by health agents, and 7,452,047 people have recovered from the disease.

Usually, cases and deaths are lower on Sundays and Mondays due to difficulties facing state health secretariats feeding the database on the weekend. ON Tuesdays, counts tend to be higher due to the confirmation of previously uncounted figures.

States

The list with Brazilian states with the highest death tolls is led by São Paulo (49,987), Rio de Janeiro (27,805), Minas Gerais (13,483), Ceará (10,223), and Pernambuco (10.031). Those with the lowest death counts are Roraima (811), Acre (837), Amapá (1,005), Tocantins (1,316), and Rondônia (2,031).

São Paulo also ranks first in number of cases, with 1,628,272 confirmations since the beginning of the pandemic, followed by Minas Gerais (646,091) and Santa Catarina (543.389). The states with the smallest case counts are Acre (44,775), Roraima (71,065), and Amapá (73,626).
