Brazil has 198.9 thousand deaths, 7.81 million cases of COVID-19

The number of deaths from COVID-19 in Brazil since the beginning of the pandemic now stands at 198,974, as per the report released Wednesday (Jan. 6) by the country’s Health Ministry. In 24 hours, 1,242 new deaths were confirmed, the highest since August 25 (1,271). There are also 2,552 deaths under investigation.

The total case tally now stands at 7,873,830. From Tuesday to Wednesday, 63,430 new positive diagnoses for COVID-19 were detected, the highest since December 17, when a peak of 70,574 cases was observed.

According to the ministry’s dashboard, 638,326 active cases being monitored. People who have recovered from COVID-19 add up to 7,036,530.

Atop the list of Brazilian states with the highest COVID-19 death toll are São Paulo (47,511), Rio de Janeiro (26,068), Minas Gerais (12,211), Ceará (10,056), and Pernambuco (9,731). At the bottom of the list are Roraima (789), Acre (814), Amapá (950), Tocantins (1,252), and Rondônia (1,875).

São Paulo also has the highest case count, with 1,501,085, followed by Minas Gerais (566,207), Santa Catarina (506,897), and Bahia (502,938). The states with the lowest number of cases are Acre (42,378), Roraima (69,180), and Amapá (69,469).
