The high temperatures recorded across most of Brazil in recent months have led the National Electricity System Operator (ONS) to register a new record in the maximum load demand in the country’s system.

On March 15, at 2:37 pm, just a few days before the end of summer in the Southern Hemisphere, the demand reached 102,478 megawatts (MW). The level was met by 92.5 percent of sustainable energy. On the same day, there was a record average load of 91,338 MW.

The two previous records for maximum load demand were set on February 7 this year (101,860 MW) and November 14 last year (101,475 MW), the ONS said on Monday (18). The previous average load record occurred on November 17, 2023, with 90,596 MW-average.

Since November 2023, the system has recorded successive records in instantaneous load demand, due to the unprecedented heat waves observed countrywide.
