President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva took to social media to mark one year since the pro-coup acts, when rioters vandalized the Planalto presidential palace, the National Congress, and the Federal Supreme Court in Brasília. In a video message, he underscored the crucial role of collective memory in shaping and preserving a nation’s democratic values. Reflecting on the attempted coup, he stated, “On January 8, 2023, a group of irresponsible individuals sought to undermine our democracy. We must ensure that this date serves as a reminder of our commitment to upholding democracy.”

Accompanying his message were images of the National Congress illuminated with projections of the Brazilian flag and the slogan “Democracy that unites us,” displayed the previous night (Jan. 7) and scheduled to be repeated today (8). These projections set the stage for the “Democracia Inabalada” (Unshakable Democracy) event, which will convene this afternoon at the National Congress and feature leaders from the Three Powers, federal representatives and senators, state ministers, and representatives from civil society organizations.

Across the country, various initiatives organized by social movements will also mark the date. President Lula urged Brazilians to join these activities and raise their voices in unison, proclaiming, “Freedom, freedom, spread your wings over us. Long live democracy!”
