President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has postponed his trip to China this week due to medical reasons. The Brazilian government has informed the Chinese authorities of the postponement and its intention to reschedule the visit.

The president has been diagnosed with both bacterial and viral bronchopneumonia caused by influenza A, and treatment has been initiated.

Lula was supposed to travel to China on Sunday (Mar. 26) with the purpose of expanding trade relations between both countries. However, despite the clinical improvement, the president’s medical service recommended postponing the trip until the viral transmission cycle is over. The trip had already been postponed from Saturday to Sunday, and now a new date has to be set.

Brazil’s Minister of Finance Fernando Haddad and Head of the Senate Rodrigo Pacheco have also canceled their visit to the Asian country.
