Brazil and Germany this week signed a document reaffirming the strategic partnership between the two nations. Brazil’s Minister of Mines and Energy Alexandre Silveira and Germany’s Minister of Economy and Climate Action Robert Habeck said the initiative should benefit their energy transition and slash greenhouse gas emissions.

Minister Silveira suggested to his German counterpart the purchase of low-carbon hydrogen produced in Brazil to help install industrial plants in the country under the National Hydrogen Program, which he described as a government priority.

In a statement, the Ministry of Mines and Energy says the idea “is to hold an auction in Brazil, with a guarantee from the German government for the development of the low-carbon hydrogen program for both the Brazilian and German governments.”

The Brazilian official explained that the partnership “will help further develop Brazil’s clean energy matrix,” adding that the ministry’s challenge will be to “reconcile this government policy with economic development in order to bring opportunities for the Brazilian people and redress inequalities, still latent in our society.”

The nation, the Brazilian minister went on to say, has “the potential to be a protagonist in this agenda,” as it boasts diversified, abundant energy resources, “in addition to an energy sector with a wide network of renewable sources.”

“Our clean energy—including sun, wind, and water power—have witness exponential growth. We have a tendency to see a large surplus of energy in Brazil, which can be brought in line with Germany’s interests regarding green hydrogen,” Minister Silveira’s note reads.

The German minister praised Brazil’s potential in the production of renewable energy and said there are “sectors interested in investing in the production of low-carbon hydrogen” in his country.
