Small businesses account for 8 out of 10 jobs created

A survey conducted by the Brazilian Micro and Small Business Support Service (Sebrae) shows that, in October, small businesses were responsible for about eight out of every ten new job openings created in the country. The positive balance of jobs generated by companies of all sizes in the country, in this period, was 159,454, with small businesses accounting for 125,114 of the hirings (78.5%).

“For the tenth consecutive month, micro and small companies showed a positive balance in job generation in the country,” Sebrae evaluated, through a note.

In 2022, the country accounts for 2.3 million new jobs – of these, 1.661 million (71.6%) through micro and small companies. The participation of medium and large companies in job generation is 22%, with 513,000 hirings.

Sectors

Among the seven sectors of the economy analyzed, micro and small companies presented a positive balance in all of them, while medium-sized and large companies registered a negative balance in civil construction and in mineral extraction. In the services area, for example, the hiring balance of small businesses was 60.2 thousand, while medium and large companies increased their staff by 29.1 thousand new hires.

Hiring by small businesses in commerce was also much higher: almost five times more than that of medium and large companies – 39.1 thousand against 8.3 thousand, respectively.

In the accumulated 2022, micro and small companies in the service sector were those that hired the most, with 850,781 new jobs, besides 274,679 positions in civil construction and 262,143 in commerce.
