Brazilian government follows internal situation in Peru with concern

The Ministry of Foreign Relations released a statement on Wednesday (7) saying that the “Brazilian government follows, with concern, the internal political situation in Peru”. This was after the Peruvian Congress ousted President Pedro Castillo and summoned Vice President Dina Boluarte to take office.

“The measures adopted on December 7th by President Pedro Castillo is incompatible with the constitutional normative framework of that country, represented a violation of the validity of democracy and the rule of law. It is expected that the constitutional decision of the Peruvian Congress will guarantee the full functioning of the democratic state in Peru,” the statement said.

In the statement, Itamaraty says Brazil is willing to maintain “the solid relations of friendship and cooperation that unite the two countries and wishes President Dina Boluarte success in her mission as head of the Peruvian state.

President-elect Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva released a statement saying that “it is always regrettable that a democratically elected president has such a fate, but I understand that everything was done within the constitutional framework”.

Lula also said he hopes that President Dina Boluarte will be successful in the task of reconciling the country and leading it along the path of development and social peace. “I hope that all Peruvian political forces work together, within a constructive democratic coexistence, the only way capable of bringing peace and prosperity to the dear and fraternal Peruvian people.”
