Global leaders congratulate Lula on presidential win

Leaders from several countries and Brazilian politicians congratulated President-elect Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, of the Workers’ Party (PT), on his victory in the second round of elections Sunday (Oct. 30).

Former President Fernando Henrique Cardoso greeted the newly elected president. On his social media, FHC, as he is usually referred to in Brazil, wrote: “Democracy has won, Brazil has won!”

Ciro Gomes, who was a presidential candidate in the first round with the Democratic Labor Party (PDT), also sent his greetings. “I wish the president-elect all the happiness in the honorable mission granted to him by the majority of our Brazilian people,” he stated.

International support

A number of global leaders have voiced their support for the president-elect. US President Joe Biden greeted Lula’s victory in a statement.

“I send my congratulations to Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva on his election to be the next president of Brazil following free, fair, and credible elections. I look forward to working together to continue the cooperation between our two countries in the months and years ahead.”

The president of France, Emmanuel Macron, said that both will have “many common challenges” to face together.

Gabriel Boric, president of Chile, also used Twitter to congratulate the Brazilian president-elect.

In greeting Lula, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said he “looks forward to working” with the future president.

“The people of Brazil have spoken. I’m looking forward to working with @LulaOficial to strengthen the partnership between our countries, to deliver results for Canadians and Brazilians, and to advance shared priorities—like protecting the environment. Congratulations, Lula!”

Panama’s President Nito Cortizo said he hopes the countries continue “walking together along the path of friendship and cooperation for the benefit of our nations.”

Germany’s Ambassador to Brazil Heiko Thoms also congratulated Lula on his victory via Twitter: “Congratulations, President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, on your victory in the elections! We are happy about the prospect of expanding together and further deepening Brazil–Germany relations.”

Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro said he celebrated “the victory of the Brazilian people” with Lula’s election as president.
