President Jair Bolsonaro has landed in New York to take part in the opening ceremony to the debates of the 76th General Assembly of the United Nations (UN).

Today (Sep. 20), Bolsonaro is confirmed to meet with UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson and to attend a reception offered by Brazil’s permanent representation with the UN.

On Tuesday (21), the heads of state and government are set to start delivering their addresses at the General Assembly, which was opened on September 14. Since then, a series of meetings, conferences, and parallel meetings have taken place. This year’s theme is “Building resilience through hope to recover from COVID-19, rebuild sustainability, respond to the needs of the planet, respect the rights of people, and revitalize the United Nations.”

Traditionally, it is the job of the Brazilian president to read the opening speech for the debates, followed by the president of the US. Last year, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the event was held online. This year, the model adopted is hybrid, with on site statements as well as video addresses.

In his speech, Bolsonaro is expected to discuss the fight against the pandemic as well as environmental issues. The president should head back to Brazil on the same day.
