The Brazilian government decided to send a multidisciplinary humanitarian mission to Haiti. A KC-390 Millennium aircraft of the Brazilian Air Force should take off headed to Haiti’s capital Port-au-Prince this weekend, taking staff and support material.

The Caribbean country—the poorest nation in the Americas—was hit by a 7.2 magnitude earthquake on Saturday (Aug. 14). Thus far, approximately 2 thousand people have been found dead. Dozens of thousands of houses have been destroyed.

The mission will include teams with agents specialized in search and rescue in collapsed urban structures, in addition to medical kits and strategic supplies as emergency pharmaceutical assistance, donated by the Brazilian Health Ministry.

The decision to send a Brazilian mission was made by the Inter-ministerial Work Group on International Humanitarian Cooperation, a collaboration involving the ministries of Justice and Public Security, Defense, Foreign Relations, Health, and Regional Development.

According to the Ministry of Defense, the mission may be adjusted according to the needs and agreements being made with the Haitian government.
