COVID-19: Cases up to 17.7 mi, deaths total 496k

The amount of people infected with the novel coronavirus in Brazil since the first case, in February 2020, has risen to 17,702,630. In 24 hours, 74,042 new positive diagnoses for COVID-19 were reported. The country also has 1,129,143 active cases being monitored.

The number of lives lost to the pandemic now stands at 496,004. From Wednesday to Thursday, state health secretariats confirmed 2,311 new deaths from COVID-19.

The figures can be found in the daily update released Thursday evening (Jun. 17) by the Health Ministry. The document combines data on cases and deaths collected by state health secretariats.

Infected patients who have recovered since the beginning of the pandemic have totaled 16,077,483. This accounts for 90.8 percent of the total infected with the virus.

States

The ranking of Brazilian states with the highest death tolls for COVID-19 is headed by São Paulo (120,524). Next come Rio de Janeiro (53,750), Minas Gerais (43,814), Rio Grande do Sul (30,163), and Paraná (29,199).

Those with the lowest number of fatalities are Roraima (1,692), Acre (1,725), Amapá (1,790), Tocantins (3,061), and Alagoas (5,074).

Vaccination

The ministry has sent 114.2 million vaccine doses against COVID-19 to states. Of these, 78.2 million have been administered—56.1 million as the first dose, 22.1 million as the second.
