COVID-19: Deaths surpass 240 thousand, cases total nearly 10 mi

The report released Tuesday (Feb. 16) by the Health Ministry shows that 55,271 new positive diagnoses for COVID-19 were confirmed in 24 hours. Thus far, people infected with the disease in the country since the beginning of the pandemic total 9,921,981.

Deaths over the course of the pandemic have surpassed 240 thousand. In 24 hours, health authorities notified 1,167 new deaths, adding up to 240,940.

The document also indicated that 797,850 patients are being monitored, and 8,883,191 have recovered from the disease.

States

São Paulo (56,702), Rio de Janeiro (31,630), Minas Gerais (16,903), Rio Grande do Sul (11,407), and Ceará (10,850) are among the 27 Brazilian states with the highest death tolls.

Those with the lowest number of fatalities are Acre (932), Roraima (995), Amapá (1,112), Tocantins (1,458), and Rondônia (2,561).
