A network of volunteers formed by the National Service for Industrial Training (Senai), factories, as well as public and private institutions have returned 1,016 fixed ventilators to hospitals across 223 cities.

According to the National Confederation of Industry (CNI), the pieces of equipment, which had been out of use, were repaired at the 39 dedicated stations located in 20 states.

Since it was brought into operation on March 30, the initiative received over 3 thousand ventilators, of which 1,351 are being fixed, and 189 are being calibrated—the last stage before returning to health agents.

“It is a great honor for Senai to coordinate this wholesome network, this network of solidarity, which has certainly helped save many lives. The mark of a thousand ventilators fixed free of cost shows that union is the key for Brazil to tackle this pandemic,” said Senai Director-General Rafael Lucchesi.

“The volunteer network hopes to continue being supported in order to fix all devices that have been taken out of use in the country over lack of repair,” he added.

According to estimates by LifesHub Analytics and the Santa Catarina Association of Medicine, there were at least 3,6 thousand out-of-order ventilators in the country—a number that might be higher, the National Confederation of Industry warns.

Each ventilator can help treat up to ten people, CNI reported.
