COVID-19: Brazil has 374,898 confirmed cases, 23,473 deaths

Brazil registered 807 new deaths from COVID-19, reaching a total of 23,473. The figure is up 3.5 percent fro Sunday (24), when 22,666 obits as a result of the novel coronavirus were reported. The numbers were made public in the Health Ministry’s report, released Monday (May 25).

A total of 11,687 new people infected with the virus were included in the statistics, adding up to 374,898, up one percent from Sunday’s 363,211.

Of all confirmed cases, 197,592 (52.7%) are being monitored, and 153,833 (41%) have recovered. There are also 3,742 deaths being investigated.

The lethality rate stood at 6.3 percent, with the mortality rate at 11,3 for every 100 thousand people.

Compared to a week ago, the increase in the number of recovered patients was 53 percent, and that of deaths under investigation 64 percent. Also compared to last week, the growth in the number of deaths from COVID-19 was 40 percent. On May 18, the total had been 16,792. The amount of confirmed cases of the disease increased 47.4 percent. Seven days go, the official report had 254,220 infected.

São Paulo is still the epicenter of the disease in the country, with the highest number of obits (6,220). The state is followed by Rio de Janeiro (4,105), Ceará (2,493), Pernambuco (2,248), and Pará (2,372).

Deaths were also reported in Amazonas (1,781), Maranhão (784), Bahia (477), Espírito Santo (465), Alagoas (337), Paraíba (279), Minas Gerais (230), Rio Grande do Norte (209), Rio Grande do Sul (197), Amapá (168), Paraná (156), Rondônia (121), the Federal District (114), Santa Catarina (109), Piauí (110), Sergipe (103), Goiás (96), Acre (97), Roraima (86), Tocantins (58), Mato Grosso (41), and Mato Grosso do Sul (17).

As for the number of confirmed cases, São Paulo ranks first (83,625). Next come Rio de Janeiro (39,298), Ceará (36,185), Amazonas (30,282) e Pernambuco (28,366). The states with the highest number of infected people also include Pará (26,077), Maranhão (22,786), Bahia (14,204), Espírito Santo (10,365), and Paraíba (8,016).

Comparing figures globally, in absolute terms, according to the map by the UK Johns Hopkins University, Brazil ranks second in the number of confirmed cases, preceded only by the US (1.66 million). For the number of deaths, the country comes sixth, behind Spain (26,834), France (28,460), Italy (32,877), the UK (36,966), and the US (98,184). Since Brazil has a larger population than most of these countries do, in a proportional comparison, Brazil’s position on the ranking goes down the list.
