Number of confirmed coronavirus cases in Brazil rises to 291

After registering the first death from the new coronavirus today (17), the Ministry of Health update registered 291 cases, against 234 identified yesterday.

The biggest difference was in suspected cases, which jumped from 2,064 to 8,819 , almost four times. São Paulo continues to lead, with 164 cases . The state is followed by Rio de Janeiro (33), Distrito Federal (22), Pernambuco (16) and Rio Grande do Sul (10). There are also cases in Santa Catarina and Minas Gerais (seven), Goiás and Paraná (six), Ceará (five), Sergipe and Mato Grosso do Sul (four), Bahia (three) and Amazonas, Rio Grande do Norte, Alagoas and Espírito Santo (one).

“The difference between the suspected cases is that they existed in several states and that manual check was probably not being validated. We said it was better to use the automated system. But it is more important to show an increase in notification than to stay only in the 2,000 cases ”, said Júlio Croda, from the Ministry of Health team, at the press conference on the balance of the day.

Health Minister Luiz Henrique Mandetta confirmed the first death by Covid-19 in São Paulo. “In almost 300 cases we had a first death. We can’t say that because we could have six deaths tomorrow. We are unable to speak of lethality. Brazil is a young country, let’s see how it works ”, he declared.

Regarding suspected cases, São Paulo has 5,047, followed by Rio de Janeiro (859), Minas Gerais (563), Bahia (354), Rio Grande do Sul (300) and Distrito Federal (253). The region with the lowest number of suspicions remains in the North (96), while the region with the most people under investigation is the Southeast (6,538). The discarded cases total 1,899.

Of the total, 57% are imported cases (those contracted outside the country), 32% come from local transmission (acquired from people who have been infected outside the country) and 12% are the result of community transmission (when the authorities are unable to identify the infection chain and the first patient or when it has already passed the fifth generation of the contagion network). Another 2% are still under investigation.

Increase in cases in the coming months

The assessment presented by the ministry is that the situation is expected to worsen in the coming months, with an increase in cases. The situation, if measures and recommendations are adopted, should only result in a easing of the situation in the second semester.

“We are going to spend 60 to 90 days of a lot of stress. So that when it arrives at the end of July, it enters the plateau [stability] . In August and September, we may be returning [to normal] since we build the immunity of more than 50% of people, ”projected Mandetta.

The minister considered that with the increase in social distancing initiatives, care must be taken not to generate harmful impacts. “We have to be careful with restrictive measures that prevent the supply of large axes. We have to take action but without causing any more problems ”, he pondered.

Forced procedures

In the press conference, representatives of the Ministry of Health responded to questions about the ordinance published today by the folder together with the Ministry of Justice, which requires the performance of procedures determined by health authorities and authorizes the use of police forces to do so.

“It makes clear situations in which this must occur, such as vaccination, examination and isolation. If we comply with what is in the regulation, it is so that there are no abuses. What we expect from the ordinance is that there is no need to call on the judiciary at all times to be successful. While we lose time and people can do damage, ”replied the executive secretary of the ministry, João Gabbardo dos Reis.

Coronavirus tests

Ministry representatives stated that they are in dialogue with the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation (Fiocruz) and with private laboratories to expand the offer of tests. The tests were identified by the World Health Organization (WHO) as a fundamental measure to prevent the spread of the virus in countries. Fiocruz would have committed to deliver another 45,000 tests between March and April, and up to 1 million tests by the next four months. In places with community transmission, only hospitalized patients will be tested.

The justification presented by the members of the ministry was that in these situations (when the virus is more widespread and there is no more knowledge about the infection chain) there are no inputs to test all people, and the focus should be on the most serious cases. “When we have community transmission, we have to test people with severe acute respiratory syndrome, who go to the hospital and the most vulnerable population, especially the elderly,” commented the representative of the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) in Brazil, Socorro Gross.

Hospital beds

Another concern expressed during the interview was with the number of beds, since the existing ones should be insufficient in the face of an increase in demand. In addition to the two thousand beds announced yesterday, the executive secretary informed that the agency’s team is analyzing alternatives to expand the offer of structures like this to deal with chaos.

“We are studying replacing the number of beds that we will not have. And units that can be used in containers, places that can provide care of less complexity, without the need to use a bed in a functioning establishment, ”said João Gabbardo dos Reis.

More doctors

The Ministry of Health reported that the enrollment of doctors in the selection notice for hiring 5.1 thousand professionals by the Mais Médicos program, scheduled to end today, will be postponed until Sunday, 18h.

According to the agency, 5,200 candidates have already registered and 98% of the municipalities have already renewed their membership. Of the more than 5,000 vacancies, 44% will go to capital. But all profiles of municipalities will be covered, including those with lower income.
